William F. Halsey Jr.Died: Aug 16 1959 - Fishers Island, New York, United States
William F. Halsey Jr. was one of America's greatest naval commanders and a defining figure of the Second World War in the Pacific. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1904 and later became a naval aviator in his fifties, turning himself into one of the Navy's biggest believers in carrier warfare. After Pearl Harbor, he led the task force that launched the famous Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in 1942, the first American bombs to ever fall on Japan, and went on to turn the tide at Guadalcanal and systematically dismantle Japanese naval power across the Pacific. He was one of only four American officers ever promoted to the five-star rank of Fleet Admiral, and had the honor of witnessing Japan's formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in September 1945. Today he is remembered as one of the boldest and most effective admirals in American military history.
